Discussion "But the war in Iraq is part of our global war on terror." The war in Iraq actually undermines our war on terror for two reasons. Firstly, do you know what percentage of the shipping containers entering our ports are not screened for WMD? 95%. Do you know how many people walk into our country illegally everyday? 4,000. That's 28,000 every week and 120,000 every month. While we've been bogged down in Iraq for the past 18 months, there have been over 2 million illegal entries into our country. If you're given $200 billion and 140,000 troops to make America more secure, would you engage them to fight people half way around the world who can't afford the bus fare out of their city, or would you engage them to secure our borders against the real terrorists capable of flying to Mexico and walking into New Mexico with a "dirty bomb"-packed suitcase? Secondly and ironically, from a strategic perspective, those troops and money have been used to shoot ourselves in the foot. Let's be clear about our enemy in this war on terror. Who committed the attacks on September 11th, USS Cole and our overseas embassies? Islamic fundamentalists. Whom did secular Saddam hate and fight for 8 years? Islamic fundamentalists in Iran. Who is emerging as a nuclear threat in the Middle East? Islamic fundamentalists in Iran. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. How smart was it for us to leave our borders porous and instead eliminate the enemy of our enemy?
