President Bush & Constitutional Ban On Marriage

"What about [President Bush]'s push for a Constitutional Ban on same-sex marriage?"

Do you know how many Constitutional Amendments have passed in the last 30 years? Just one, and it was for something rather mundane: compensation for the members of the Congress.

President Bush knew that a Constitutional ban on an issue as controversial as same sex marriage would be tough even if he were to spend all 4 years of his first term pushing for it.

Still, if President Bush had started pushing for it right after his inauguration, we may support him more today than we do. Instead, we must pose two questions: (1) if President Bush had been so serious about this Constitutional ban, why did he choose a running mate with a lesbian daughter and who is now distancing himself from such a ban; and (2) why did President Bush wait until this year - an election year - to start "pushing" for it?
