Our Heritage The myriad problems facing America today precede the current political contest and is rooted in a dangerous misunderstanding of the First Amendment to the US Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The popular belief is that our nation's founding fathers intended to keep apart the church and the state. In reality, this belief is only half true. They did intend to keep the government out of God's affairs. But they did not intend God to stay out of the government's affairs.
